International Conference:
Creative Industries in Africa: Labour, Entrepreneurship and Policy
University of Ghana, Accra
January 8-10, 2025
The creative industries in Africa have witnessed remarkable growth and garnered unprecedented global attention in recent decades, reshaping perceptions and discussions surrounding economic and cultural development across the continent. There is currently an air of optimism, with assertions that creative industries will propel Africa into high-growth economies and foster self-awareness, well-being, and prosperity. The creative industries, however, are marked by precarious labour conditions, underdeveloped infrastructure, and inadequate policy frameworks.
This conference focuses on the intricate interplay between labour dynamics, entrepreneurship, and policy imperatives that shape the trajectory of Africa's creative industries. Key themes to be explored include: shifting dynamics of creative labour, opportunities and challenges faced by creative entrepreneurs, changing business models, and policy shifts.
Spanning three days, the conference will feature keynote speakers, parallel paper presentation sessions, and an art exhibition. The conference is organized by the collaborative, interdisciplinary research project Advancing Creative Industries for Development in Ghana (ACIG), see: https://www.creativeghana.org/ NB This is an in-person conference with no hybrid option.
Paper presentations are invited from scholars, researchers, and artists focusing on the creative industries in Africa. Suggested topics include but are not limited to:
